How to measure

  1. Measure the perimeter length of each interior wall along the floor line.
  2. Measure and subtract all doorway openings, fireplace hearths, and floor registers.
  3. Select standard trim piece length (e.g., 2.4 m / 8 ft or 4.8 m / 16 ft sticks).
  4. Add a 10–15% waste allowance for 45° corner miters and end cuts.

Formula

Baseboard Pieces = Ceiling( ( (2 × (Length + Width) − Doorways) × (1 + Waste) ) ÷ Piece Length )

Room perimeter is calculated and doorway openings are subtracted to find net linear perimeter.

The linear requirement is adjusted for corner miter cuts (inside 45° and outside 45° returns).

Divided by piece length and rounded up to full commercial molding pieces.

Worked example: Living room baseboard trim installation

  1. A room measuring 5.0 m length by 4.0 m width has a gross perimeter of 18.0 m.
  2. Subtracting 1.8 m total for two doorway openings leaves 16.2 m net perimeter.
  3. With a 10% corner miter waste allowance, adjusted linear requirement is 17.82 m.
  4. Using 2.4 m commercial pieces: 17.82 m ÷ 2.4 m = 7.425 pieces, rounded up to 8 pieces.

At 12 USD per piece, estimated baseboard cost is 96 USD for 8 pieces (19.2 m total material).

  • Purchase pieces in the longest available lengths (16 ft / 4.8 m) to eliminate mid-wall scarf joints.
  • Acclimate primed MDF, pine, or hardwood moldings inside the room for 48 hours before cutting.

Corner miter cuts and room perimeter budgeting

Baseboard trim requires precise measurement around the entire internal perimeter of the room, subtracting doorway openings.

Inside corners are best installed with coped joints or 45° miters, while outside corners require 45° miters with end-return details. Corner cuts generate short unusable scrap offcuts, requiring a 10–15% waste allowance.
