How to measure

Sketch the room and mark closets, alcoves, bay windows and door recesses before measuring.
Measure length and width at the longest points because many rooms are not perfectly square.
Break irregular rooms into rectangles and add the areas together before entering an equivalent total.
Check whether flooring will continue under appliances, wardrobes or cabinets before subtracting fixed areas.

Input guide

Coverage per box should match the exact product being purchased. Similar products can have different coverage because plank sizes and pack counts vary.
Waste depends on layout direction, plank length, stagger pattern and number of doorways. Five percent is often too low for small or complex rooms.
Enter price per box, not price per square metre, if you want the cost to match the recommended box count.
Use imperial units only when the box coverage is also entered in square feet.

Formula

Boxes = surface area × (1 + waste) ÷ coverage per box

The calculator adjusts room area by the waste percentage, divides by the area covered by one box and rounds up to a whole box.

Rounding happens after waste because flooring is purchased in boxes and partial boxes are not normally sold.

The result covers material quantity only. Underlayment, transitions, trims, adhesive and installation supplies are separate.

Worked example: Laminate flooring for a living room

A living room measuring 5.5 m by 4.2 m has 23.1 m² of area.
With 8% waste, the adjusted project area is 24.95 m².
If each box covers 2.2 m², then 24.95 ÷ 2.2 = 11.34 boxes.
The calculator rounds this to 12 boxes.

At 31 USD per box, the flooring material estimate is 12 boxes and 372 USD before underlayment or trims.

Buying advice

Buy all boxes from the same product line, color, thickness and locking profile.
Keep one unopened or partial box after installation if the product may be discontinued.
For stairs, angled walls or continuous flooring through multiple rooms, confirm layout waste with the installer.

Common mistakes

Using advertised room size instead of measured finished floor area
Entering price per square metre while the calculator expects price per box
Forgetting closets and doorway recesses
Choosing a waste allowance that is too low for diagonal or continuous layouts
Mixing boxes from different dye lots or locking systems

Measure complex rooms as smaller rectangles

For an L-shaped room, bay window, hallway connection, or built-in recess, divide the floor into non-overlapping rectangles and calculate each area separately. Add the areas only once; a quick labeled sketch prevents double-counting the overlap between sections.

Measure to the installation boundary rather than the visible rug line. Decide in advance whether flooring will continue under removable appliances, cabinets, wardrobes, thresholds, or islands, because that choice changes the covered area.

Turn square area into a reliable box order

Use the exact coverage printed on the current box, not an older listing for a similar product.
Round up to whole boxes only after adding the chosen waste allowance.
Keep product code, color, plank size, finish, and production lot consistent.
Confirm whether the supplier accepts returns of unopened boxes before adding repair stock.
Store spare planks in a dry, conditioned place and keep the product label with them.

Installation conditions can change the project

The result does not determine moisture limits, expansion gaps, underlayment, vapor control, floor flatness, or acclimation time. These requirements differ between laminate, engineered wood, vinyl, solid wood, and other systems.

Read the exact installation guide before ordering accessories or starting work. For concrete slabs, below-grade spaces, wet areas, radiant heating, or signs of moisture, obtain the required tests and professional advice.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra flooring should I buy?

Use 5–8% for simple rectangular rooms, 10% for normal homes and 12–15% for angled walls, diagonal layouts or future repair stock.

Should I subtract cabinets?

Subtract only permanent areas where flooring will definitely not be installed. Many floating floors still run under removable appliances.

Why does the result show whole boxes?

Flooring is sold by the box. A result of 11.1 boxes still requires buying 12 boxes.

Does this include underlayment?

No. Underlayment is usually calculated by roll or square area and should be estimated separately.

Can I combine several rooms?

Yes, if the same flooring runs continuously. Add the areas first and choose a waste allowance that reflects the combined layout.
