Metric versus imperial concrete calculations

How concrete volume changes between cubic metres, cubic yards, centimetres and inches.

Concrete is a volume problem

Concrete quantity comes from length × width × depth. The difficult part is not the multiplication; it is keeping every dimension in a compatible unit before multiplying.

Metric estimates usually use metres for length and width, centimetres for slab depth and cubic metres for ordering. Imperial estimates often use feet for length and width, inches for depth and cubic yards for ordering.

The common depth mistake

A 10 cm slab is 0.10 m, not 10 m. A 4 inch slab is 0.333 ft, not 4 ft. Entering depth as a full metre or foot can inflate an estimate by ten to twelve times.

Cubic metres and cubic yards

One cubic metre is about 1.308 cubic yards. This matters when comparing an online metric estimate with a supplier who quotes in cubic yards.

Always confirm which unit the supplier uses before comparing prices. A price per cubic metre and a price per cubic yard are not interchangeable.

Ordering safely

Small concrete shortages can be more expensive than a modest overage because a second delivery may include minimum load charges. That is why most small slab estimates include a waste allowance.

For structural slabs, footings, suspended concrete or permitted work, use the thickness, reinforcement and mix specified by the designer or local code.

One complete conversion example

A slab measuring 16 ft by 12 ft at 4 in deep has a volume of 16 × 12 × (4 ÷ 12) = 64 ft³. Dividing by 27 gives about 2.370 yd³ before waste. With a 7% allowance, the planning quantity is about 2.536 yd³.

The same shape is approximately 4.8768 m by 3.6576 m by 0.1016 m. Multiplying those values gives about 1.812 m³; converting 1.812 m³ by 1.30795 again gives about 2.370 yd³. The two paths should agree apart from display rounding.

Conversion checklist before calling a supplier

  • Write every dimension with its unit and convert depth before multiplying.
  • Keep all three dimensions in one system until the volume is complete.
  • Apply waste once, after the base geometric volume has been checked.
  • State whether the final number is cubic metres, cubic yards, cubic feet, or bag count.
  • Ask the supplier to repeat the ordered quantity and unit back to you.

Bag yield is not a universal conversion

The number of bags cannot be derived from volume alone without the yield of the exact bag. Bag weight, formulation, required water, and regional packaging differ, so use the manufacturer’s printed cured or mixed yield.

For large pours, compare the practical limits of hand mixing with ready-mix delivery, placement time, access, and minimum-load charges. The calculator supplies volume; the construction method remains a project decision.

Why depth causes most unit errors

Length and width are often written in feet while slab depth is written in inches. Before multiplying, divide inches by 12 to obtain feet: 3 in is 0.25 ft, 4 in is about 0.3333 ft, 5 in is about 0.4167 ft, and 6 in is 0.5 ft. In metric work, divide centimetres by 100 to obtain metres.

Keep the converted depth visible in your notes and check the final scale. Doubling depth should double volume; changing only the display unit should not change the physical quantity. These two quick checks catch misplaced decimal points before they reach a supplier order.
