How to measure

  1. Measure the overall length and width of the planned deck platform.
  2. Determine deck board width (e.g., 14 cm / 5.5 in) and standard commercial length (e.g., 4.8 m / 16 ft).
  3. Account for board edge-to-edge expansion gaps (usually 4–6 mm / 3/16 in).
  4. Add a 10% waste allowance for square cuts, end trimming, and joist stagger offcuts.

Formula

Deck Boards = Ceiling( (Deck Width ÷ Effective Board Width) × Deck Length ÷ Board Length × (1 + Waste) )

Effective board width equals physical board width plus the specified expansion gap.

Total linear runs required across the deck platform are calculated.

The total linear requirement is divided by commercial board length and adjusted for waste.

Worked example: Outdoor composite deck patio

  1. A deck measuring 5.0 m length by 3.0 m width produces 15.0 m² of surface area.
  2. Using 14 cm (0.14 m) boards with 5 mm (0.005 m) gap = 0.145 m effective width.
  3. Runs required = 3.0 m ÷ 0.145 m = 21 runs of 5.0 m = 105 total linear meters.
  4. Using 4.8 m commercial boards with 10% waste: (105 ÷ 4.8) × 1.10 = 24.06 boards, rounded to 25 boards.

At 25 USD per board, estimated decking material cost is 625 USD for 25 boards (~450 fasteners).

Buying advice

  • Choose commercial board lengths that match or divide evenly into your deck dimensions to avoid mid-span seams.
  • Use marine-grade 316 stainless steel or ceramic-coated fasteners to prevent corrosion.
  • Apply protective joist tape over the top of timber framing to double substructure lifespan.

Common mistakes

  • Installing composite boards with zero gap, leading to buckling during summer heat expansion.
  • Exceeding the maximum allowable joist span (40 cm / 16 in on-center for composite boards).

Joist spacing and board gap rules

Standard residential composite and timber decking boards require joists spaced at 16 in (40 cm) on-center for perpendicular layouts, and 12 in (30 cm) on-center for 45° diagonal patterns.

Leave a 3/16 in to 1/4 in (4–6 mm) gap between board edges to permit rainwater drainage and thermal/moisture expansion.

Decking materials and fastener checklist

  • Order commercial board lengths (e.g., 12 ft, 16 ft, 20 ft / 3.6 m, 4.8 m, 6.0 m) that minimize end-to-end butt joints across the deck run.
  • Budget 350 hidden fastener clips or color-matched deck screws per 100 sq ft (10 m²) of decking surface.
  • Use marine-grade 316 stainless steel or ceramic-coated exterior fasteners to prevent rust and galvanic timber discoloration.
  • Include picture-frame border boards, fascia trim boards, and stair riser material as separate lineal runs.
  • Apply protective joist tape over the top edge of all substructure framing timber to double substructure lifespan.

Substructure engineering and permit scope

This tool estimates top deck surface boards and fasteners. It does not size ledger boards, concrete footing diameters, frost-depth piers, or beam spans.
