How to measure

Measure wall length and finished height accurately across the planned footing.
Subtract window and door openings that will not be filled with brick masonry.
Confirm modular brick face length and height (standard: 215 × 65 mm / 8 × 2-1/4 in).
Set standard mortar bed joint thickness (typically 10 mm / 3/8 in).

Formula

Brick Count = Ceiling( (Net Wall Area × (1 + Waste)) ÷ ((Brick Length + Joint) × (Brick Height + Joint)) )

The nominal modular brick unit area includes both the physical brick face and the surrounding mortar bed and head joints.

Net wall surface is divided by nominal unit area and adjusted for cutting and breakage waste (10%).

Mortar bag requirement is calculated: approx. 1 bag (80 lb / 36 kg) per 35–40 bricks.

Worked example: Garden privacy boundary brick wall

A single-wythe garden wall measuring 4.0 m length by 2.5 m height = 10.0 m² area.
Subtracting 1.0 m² for a gate opening leaves 9.0 m² net brickwork.
Using 21.5 × 6.5 cm bricks with 1.0 cm mortar joint = nominal area 0.016875 m² per brick.
With 10% waste: (9.0 × 1.10) ÷ 0.016875 = 586.67 bricks, rounded up to 587 bricks.

At 0.80 USD per brick, estimated cost is 469.60 USD for 587 bricks (~9 bags mortar).

Buying advice

Order all bricks in a single shipment from the same kiln production firing to ensure uniform color blend.
Use Type N mortar for above-grade exterior walls and Type S for foundation and structural retaining walls.
Retain 25 to 50 spare bricks stored flat for future tuckpointing and landscape wall modifications.

Common mistakes

Calculating brick count without adding mortar joint thickness, overestimating bricks by 15–20%.
Laying bricks without installing a certified damp-proof course (DPC) above grade.
Omitting wall ties when fastening brick veneer to timber framing.
Mixing inconsistent mortar batches with varying sand-to-cement ratios.

Brick dimensions and mortar joint thickness

Standard modular bricks measure 7-5/8 × 2-1/4 × 3-5/8 in (approx. 215 × 65 × 102 mm). Including a standard 3/8 in (10 mm) mortar joint creates a modular nominal unit of 8 × 2-2/3 in (approx. 225 × 75 mm).

Always calculate your wall based on the nominal dimensions with mortar joints to avoid over-ordering bricks by up to 20%.

Brick and masonry mortar checklist

Standard single-wythe brick walls require approximately 48 to 50 bricks per square meter (approx. 6.5 to 7 bricks per square foot).
One 80 lb (36 kg) bag of pre-mixed Type N or Type S masonry mortar lays approximately 35–40 modular bricks.
Order brick ties (wall ties) at a frequency of one tie every 2.6 sq ft (0.25 m²) for cavity and veneer walls.
Order all bricks in a single production run from the same kiln firing to guarantee color and texture consistency.
Keep spare full bricks stored safely for future tuckpointing or alteration work.

Structural masonry, lintels, and DPC limits

This tool estimates single-wythe brick units and mortar volume for veneer or garden walls. It does not calculate reinforced structural masonry, wind loading, or lintel beam spans over openings.

Install a certified damp-proof course (DPC) 15 cm above ground level and incorporate weep holes every 80 cm in exterior cavity brickwork.
